Last fortnight's feature discussed how people have forgotten or have allowed themselves to get sidetracked from the true purpose of their lives and the fact that an individual can find true happiness in his work only if his career goals are aligned with his spirit.

People who are closer to their souls are able to contribute more effectively to themselves and to society at large. Companies that foster employees' personal and spiritual growth find it makes them tremendously more productive. The HR department's role therefore, should be to provide an enabling environment and the practical tools to encourage continuous growth and learning.

So, how aligned are you with yourself? How closely do your career goals match with your spirit? Answer the following questionnaire created by Dr Aparna Bhoj, our senior organizational psychologist, and things could get a lot clearer for you...

Answer Key

If your answers are as below you are taking your soul to work everyday.

1 b, 2 b, 3 b, 4 a, 5 a.

What the answers represent:

1b: Authenticity: This means that you work to express yourself at work. Your work is an expression of your personality interests and abilities.

2b. Inquiry: Events and situations at work provide us with learning opportunities-they're called life. If we are sensitive to our surrounding there are lessons waiting to be learned. But when life throws us a situation that can't be solved by what we know, we're stuck. Often the solution can come only after we admit to ourselves that we don't have an answer. Only then can we seek and find. And in observing the environs we may find the answers to lives deepest mysteries.

3b. Purpose: Is your purpose in going to work, to only to pay your bills and debts? Is that purpose worthy of who you are? If your work is about the larger scheme of things in your life then you are in tune with your life's purpose.

4a. Balance: The lumberjack who stops from time to time to sharpen his or her saw will out-perform someone who just saws all day long.

5a. Joy: How much of what you do from moment to moment is a beautiful manifestation of your spirit? People who are reconnecting their work and spirit look for ways to make each phone call, meeting or conversation an expression of who they are. If your days are filled with excitement and innovation it is a reflection of the joy within you.

Quote of the issue : Back to top

Our workplace is a classroom for our spiritual development. Perhaps our real work is to accept the call to greater authenticity, a spirit of inquiry, a purpose worthy of who we are, a more balanced life and joy.
